The Best Wedding Venues in Connecticut: A Photographer’s Guide

Choosing your wedding venue is the first big decision you’ll make, and it shapes everything after it: your date, your guest list, your style, and definitely your photos. As a Connecticut wedding photographer, I’ve seen how much a venue’s light, layout and surroundings affect a wedding day. So this guide is less about tasting menus and more about how each type of venue looks, feels and photographs.

Whether you want salt air on the shoreline, rolling vineyard views or a grand historic estate, Connecticut has a lot to offer in a pretty small state.

Shoreline and Beach Venues

Connecticut’s coastline gives you water views, sea breezes and some of the prettiest golden-hour light in New England.

Tyde at Walnut Beach, Milford. A relaxed beachfront venue right on the sand. I love how we have quick access to the beach for portraits and the upstairs balcony is a great spot for a cocktail hour.

Water’s Edge Resort & Spa, Westbrook. A shoreline resort with lawns that roll down toward the water. There are so many rooms for guests to stay in and a beautiful ballroom.

Madison Beach Hotel, Madison. A boutique beachfront hotel with a classic coastal feel. This hotel is perfect for a small or medium sized wedding. It is truly stunning!

Inn at Longshore, Westport. A waterfront inn with sweeping views across the Sound.

Owenego Inn, Branford. A relaxed waterfront venue with open views of the shoreline. A really pretty venue by the shoreline that has lots of space for you and your guests.

Lighthouse Point Park, New Haven. A seaside park with a historic lighthouse and a vintage carousel. This charming park was recently hit by a bad microburst tornado so they don’t have a ton of offerings at the moment, but definitely keep it in mind for your future wedding.

Anthony’s Ocean View, New Haven. A waterfront banquet venue with panoramic views of the Sound. I always tell my friends to never sleep on banquet venues because they have the best food and most extravagant cocktail hour set ups!

Delamar Greenwich Harbor, Greenwich. A harborside boutique hotel with a European feel. You can’t go wrong with waterfront views for your ceremony and cocktail hour.

Branford House at Avery Point, Groton. A historic mansion on the water with sweeping views of Long Island Sound.

Saybrook Point Resort & Marina, Old Saybrook. A waterfront resort where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound.

Stamford Yacht Club, Stamford. A classic yacht club with sweeping harbor and Sound views.

Guilford Yacht Club, Guilford. A laid-back waterfront club with marina views. A really stunning intimate space that has a beautiful tent for your reception.

Photographer tip: Shoreline weddings get windy. Plan for veils that will fly, hair that won’t stay perfect, and a backup indoor portrait spot. I always recommend trading out your hair down for an updo to help with this. The payoff is a sunset over the water that no backdrop can beat.

Historic Estates and Mansions

If you want old-world elegance, Connecticut’s historic estates feel like a step back in time.

Wadsworth Mansion, Middletown. A grand estate with formal gardens and plenty of variety for portraits. This is one of my favorite venues in Connecticut because it is so clean and glamorous, but also gives a modern feel.

Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington. A Colonial Revival house set on rolling grounds with a sunken garden. Their front porch is a fantastic backup option if it rains on your wedding day, and the gardens are so stunning for every type of portrait!

The Estate New Haven. A countryside-style venue that hosts one wedding at a time, so couples have the whole property to themselves. Not many people know about this gem of a venue, but the staff and owner are so sweet and they always host a great wedding!

Saint Clements Castle, Portland. A stone castle-style venue overlooking the Connecticut River. They have multiple ballrooms and a lot is included in the venue package.

Waveny House, New Canaan. A grand Tudor-style mansion set in a large park. A hidden gem, in my opinion. There are incredible spots for beautiful, classic portraits – you can’t go wrong!

The Society Room of Hartford, Hartford. A former bank building with dramatic, old-world interiors downtown. This venue is really iconic if you are looking for a moody wedding day vibe.

The Lace Factory, Deep River. A restored historic factory with an industrial-chic feel. Such a unique venue near the steam train lines.

Gillette Castle State Park, East Haddam. A hilltop stone castle with views over the Connecticut River. This is a truly unique venue if you are looking for something fun!

New Haven Lawn Club, New Haven. A classic club with manicured lawns and an elegant ballroom. It’s really close to the highway and is a beautiful spot for a medium sized wedding!

Harkness Memorial State Park, Eolia Mansion, Waterford. A waterfront mansion with formal gardens. It’s also one of the most popular engagement session locations in the state because there’s so much that it has to offer. There is a beautiful mansion, the sprawling gardens and a beachfront that’s only a few steps away.

Country Inns and Intimate Venues

Gwyn Careg Inn, Pomfret. A charming countryside inn in the Quiet Corner, ideal for smaller, cozier weddings. This is one of Connecticut’s best kept venue secrets. The inn is so incredibly charming and has so much to offer if you are looking for an intimate European feeling wedding.

Mayflower Inn & Spa, Washington. A luxury inn in the Litchfield Hills with lush gardens. A Connecticut favorite!

Smith Farm Gardens, East Haddam. A family-owned historic 15-acre estate with an 18th-century farmhouse, green lawns, flower and vegetable gardens, and an apple orchard. One of my favorite garden venues in the state!

Simsbury 1820 House, Simsbury. A historic manor-turned-inn with a cozy, intimate feel. This Inn has such cute charm and bold colors that are beautiful for photo opportunities.

The Litchfield Inn, Litchfield. A classic New England inn in the heart of the Litchfield Hills. The sprawling property has a beautiful pool and back patio that are great for entertaining your guests!

Photographer tip: With an intimate wedding, every guest ends up in the photos. Think about a longer, more relaxed timeline with time for candid moments.

Vineyard and Farm Venues

Saltwater Farm Vineyard, Stonington. A vineyard by the coastal marshes that blends rustic and modern.

Stone Acres Farm, Stonington. A working farm near the coast with open fields and rustic barn settings.

Lyman Orchards, Middlefield. Sprawling orchards and rolling grounds in central Connecticut. If you love golf and orchards, this is the place for you. They have a beautiful tent for your reception and guests can enjoy your cocktail hour near the range.

Photographer tip: Vineyard rows look their best in late afternoon when the sun is low. Ask your planner to put portraits in that window.

Resort and All-in-One Venues

Aria, Prospect. A banquet venue with elegant ballrooms and landscaped grounds. This is actually one of my favorite wedding venues in Connecticut because it is simply so elegant and it’s truly a blank slate so you can do a lot with the space. They also have such a chic and cute chapel on the property!

La Bella Vista, Waterbury. A banquet venue with ballroom and outdoor terrace spaces.

Cascade Fine Catering, Hamden. A banquet venue with ballroom space for larger celebrations. I absolutely adore Cascade! Their indoor spaces are beautiful, the staff is so sweet, and the food is quite incredible. If you are looking to host a large wedding then you should definitely consider Cascade!

Lake of Isles, North Stonington. A resort with lakeside and golf-course views, plus on-site rooms for guests.

Mohegan Sun, Uncasville. A large resort with ballrooms, dining and on-site rooms for guests. There is no shortage of rooms to stay in or things to do!

Delamar West Hartford, West Hartford. A boutique hotel with event space and guest rooms under one roof.

Aqua Turf Club, Plantsville. A large banquet venue with indoor and outdoor ceremony options. It’s a very popular venue, and for a good reason!

How to Choose the Right Connecticut Wedding Venue

Think about the season. Connecticut gives you blooming gardens in spring, beach weather in summer and incredible foliage in fall. Pick a venue that shines in your season.

Ask about rain plans. Every outdoor venue should have an indoor backup that you actually like. It’s worth noting that many tent companies have the ability to cancel your rental if wind gusts are above 30-40 MPH. Check with them ahead of time, and always have a plan b.

Look at real wedding galleries, not just styled shoots. Ask venues and photographers for full galleries from your time of year.

Consider the ceremony location. If you’re having a church ceremony, such as a Greek Orthodox wedding, factor in travel time between the church and your reception venue.

Check sunset times. Your venue’s best photo spot is only as good as the light you have when you get there.
