The day before Emily and Chris’s wedding at Glen Manor House, they gathered with their closest family members for a beautiful and meaningful Chinese tea ceremony. Held at their hotel, the ceremony was filled with tradition, laughter, emotion, and the opportunity to honor the generations of family who came before them.

As a wedding photographer, I love documenting cultural traditions because they tell such an important part of a couple’s story. A Chinese tea ceremony is one of the most significant traditions in many Chinese weddings, symbolizing respect, gratitude, and the joining of two families.
If you’re looking for a wedding photographer for your Chinese tea ceremony, inquire now!

A Chinese tea ceremony is a pre-wedding or wedding-day tradition where the bride and groom serve tea to their parents, grandparents, and senior family members. In return, family members offer blessings, words of wisdom, and often gifts such as red envelopes or jewelry.
The ceremony serves as a way for the couple to formally express gratitude to their families while receiving their support and well wishes for their marriage.

While every family incorporates their own customs, the flow of a traditional Chinese tea ceremony typically follows a similar structure:
The bride and groom wear attire chosen for the ceremony and prepare tea to serve to their family members.
Parents, grandparents, and other honored elders are seated according to family hierarchy and tradition.
The couple kneels or bows before each family member and respectfully offers them a cup of tea. As each relative receives the tea, they offer blessings and congratulations to the couple.
Family members often present the couple with red envelopes containing money, jewelry, or other meaningful gifts as symbols of prosperity and good fortune. If they receive jewelry, they put it on right away.
Once the formal tea service concludes, families typically gather for photos, conversation, and celebration together.

What made Emily and Chris’s Chinese tea ceremony so special was seeing both families come together to celebrate their marriage. The room was filled with smiles, heartfelt moments, and traditions that had been passed down through generations.
These are the kinds of wedding moments that deserve to be documented just as much as the wedding day itself. While the ceremony may have taken place in a hotel suite rather than a grand ballroom, it was one of the most meaningful parts of their wedding weekend.

For couples planning a wedding that incorporates cultural traditions, I always encourage setting aside dedicated time to photograph these moments. The emotions, family connections, and symbolism behind a Chinese tea ceremony create memories that will be treasured for generations to come.
