If you’re dreaming of a romantic New London engagement session, it’s hard to imagine a more perfect location than Harkness Memorial State Park. With its historic mansion, beautifully manicured gardens, and shoreline views, it offers so much variety in one location—and Maria and Kyle’s session was the perfect example of why I love photographing couples here.

The best part? We completely lucked out with the weather.
Just days before their session, Connecticut skies were hazy from the Canadian wildfires, and we were anxiously watching the forecast. Thankfully, by the evening of their engagement session, the smoke had cleared, leaving us with the dreamiest summer light and one of the most beautiful golden hours of the season.

One of the biggest reasons couples love planning a New London engagement session at Harkness Memorial State Park is the incredible architecture. We began our evening around the historic mansion, taking advantage of the timeless stone exterior, grand archways, and elegant details that make every image feel classic.
The mansion creates such a sophisticated backdrop while still allowing each couple’s personality to shine. Maria and Kyle were so natural together, making my job incredibly easy from the very first few minutes.

After exploring the mansion grounds, we wandered through the gardens where everything was in full bloom. Between the colorful flowers, winding pathways, and lush greenery, every turn seemed to offer another perfect photo opportunity.
One of my favorite things about Harkness is how easily we can transition between completely different looks without ever leaving the property. In one part of the session, it feels like we’re at a European estate, and just a few minutes later, we’re surrounded by peaceful gardens bursting with summer color.
Maria looked absolutely beautiful in her flowing dresses, and Kyle couldn’t stop smiling at her throughout the evening. Those quiet, genuine moments are always my favorite to capture.

Of course, no New London engagement session at Harkness Memorial State Park is complete without ending at the beach.
As the sun began to dip lower, we made our way to the shoreline where soft golden light reflected across the sand and dunes. The beach offered the perfect relaxed ending to the evening as Maria and Kyle walked barefoot together, laughing and soaking in every moment before sunset.
Golden hour truly showed off for us. After worrying all week about smoky skies, we were rewarded with warm sunshine, glowing light, and the kind of summer evening photographers dream about.

Harkness Memorial State Park continues to be one of my favorite locations for engagement sessions because it offers so much variety in one place. Whether you’re drawn to historic architecture, elegant gardens, or Connecticut’s beautiful coastline, you can experience all three during a single session.
For couples planning a New London engagement session, it’s one of the most versatile and breathtaking locations in the state.
Maria and Kyle’s evening couldn’t have been more perfect, and I already can’t wait to celebrate with them again on their wedding day. Sessions like this are such a reminder that sometimes the weather worries work themselves out—and when they do, they create a little bit of magic.
