Georgia and Kevin’s Smith Farm Gardens wedding on July 4, was made even more meaningful because it marked exactly 12 years to the day they first met. What better way to honor over a decade of love than by saying “I do” surrounded by family, friends, and the beautiful gardens of one of Connecticut’s most charming wedding venues?

From an emotional first look to an unforgettable weather twist that no one saw coming, their wedding day was filled with moments that perfectly reflected who they are.

A Beautiful Ceremony in the Sunken Garden

Smith Farm Gardens offers so many incredibly picturesque locations throughout the property. Not only are the main buildings gorgeous, but there are sprawling gardens, a back field, and lots of beautiful architecture.

The day began exactly as you’d expect for a New England Fourth of July weekend: warm, sunny, and bright.

After one of the hottest weeks Connecticut has seen this summer—with temperatures climbing well over 100°F—the slight breeze on their wedding day was certainly appreciated. Even so, we made sure to sneak inside for a few air-conditioned breaks during portraits to keep everyone comfortable.

When ceremony time arrived, the afternoon sun poured into the Sunken Garden, creating soft, glowing light that photographed beautifully.

Why a First Look Made All the Difference

One of the best decisions Georgia and Kevin made was choosing to do a first look before the ceremony.

Because we completed nearly all of their portraits—including bridal party and family photos—before guests arrived, they were able to truly enjoy their extended cocktail hour and the reception without feeling rushed or missing any of it.

It also meant we captured every important portrait in beautiful weather before Mother Nature had other plans later that evening.

As a photographer, having that extra flexibility in the timeline made the entire day feel relaxed and allowed the couple to simply enjoy being present with one another.

Cocktail Hour on the Lawn & Reception Under the Tent

Following the ceremony, guests gathered on the expansive back lawn for cocktail hour before moving beneath the elegant reception tent overlooking the gardens. The evening was absolutely beautiful.

One of my favorite parts was when the toasts came along. The bride’s sister delivered a beautiful speech that rhymed, and it was so touching! She even received a stranding ovation.

The Thunderstorm No One Expected

Then, around 8:30 p.m., everything changed. Out of nowhere, and with no warning, a powerful thunderstorm rolled through with winds reaching nearly 80 mph—one of the wildest weather events I’ve experienced at a wedding.

Guests quickly moved inside the house for safety as the storm swept across the property. Instead of worrying too much, family and friends turned the house into an impromptu party, laughing, talking, and making the most of the unexpected adventure together. Once the storm passed and it was safe, everyone headed back out to continue celebrating under the tent.

It made for an incredibly memorable end to an already amazing day. Congratulations, Georgia and Kevin! Thank you for trusting me to capture such an incredible celebration. I can’t wait for you to relive these memories for years to come.
