What to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking

Choosing the right wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make during your wedding planning process. You will not only spend your whole wedding day with your photographer (so make sure you like their personality!), but your photos will ultimately be your only physical memories of your special day.

To ensure you’re hiring someone who aligns with your vision, style, and needs, it’s essential to ask the right questions. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate your consultation and book with confidence.

01. What is your photography style?

Ask your photographer to describe their style. Do they specialize in light and airy, dark and moody, or timeless and classic photography? Be sure to also check out their website or request full galleries of past weddings to get a sense for their style. Ensure that the work across their portfolio is consistent and represents what they are telling you!

02. How much experience do you have?

On your consultation call with your photographer, find out how long they’ve been a wedding photographer and how many weddings they’ve shot. Be sure to ask if they have experience with weddings similar to yours (e.g., cultural or religious traditions, venues, or destination weddings).

03. What are your packages?

Inquire about the number of hours of coverage, the number of photographers, and any additional services like engagement sessions or albums. With ephemiamaria photography, every wedding package includes a second shooter, engagement session, and optional add-ons such as custom albums and additional coverage.

04. Do you have insurance?

This is an essential question to ask your photographer. Any professional photographer should carry liability insurance. Some venues even require proof of insurance, such as a COI, which we are happy to provide. Be sure to check this before signing a contract with your photographer!

05. Can you walk us through your backup plan?

Ask how they handle equipment failures, weather issues, or emergencies that might prevent them from attending. Do they bring backup cameras, lenses, and lighting gear? How do they store your photos – do they have multiple backups?

At ephemiamaria photography, all of our cameras have slots for two memory cards, meaning that your wedding day is being simultaneously backed up as we photograph it. Additionally, photos are downloaded onto two hard drives, and then continuously backed up onto the cloud. Your wedding photos are our utmost priority, and we want to keep them safe!

In case of a rainy day, we always keep clear umbrellas in our car, and come prepared for all types of weather. We are ready to get went to get some awesome portraits, as long as you’re along for the ride!

06. What does a wedding day look like with you?

Find out how they work with couples to create a photography timeline. Ask about their strategy for managing family portraits, bridal party photos, and golden hour shots. Will you step out of your reception for golden hour portraits? Will they help you select your ceremony time based on the best lighting? Do they arrive early to get detail shots and flat lays?

We always arrive while bridal hair and makeup is getting done so that we can start photographing the details (invitation suite, wedding dress, couple getting ready, etc.) If the couple is doing a first look, we then do a first look and portraits, and sometimes even family photos to get them out of the way before the ceremony. The day is totally dependent on the flow of how the couple would like it to go, which is decided through pre-planning calls leading up to your big day!

07. What happens after the wedding?

Be sure to ask about their editing process and how long it will take to receive your photos. The industry average ranges from 4-12 weeks, depending on how large the wedding is and how many photos the photographer normally takes and delivers.

It is also important to find out what delivery format your photographer will use for your wedding photos — will they be delivered via online gallery, USB, physical prints? Maybe a mix of a few?

08. Can we see client reviews or testimonials?

Be sure to look for reviews on their website, Google, or platforms like Zola. Client reviews are really important to ensure that your photographer is not only legitimate, but can deliver on their promises. If possible, ask for references to hear directly from past clients.

09. What is your booking process?

Once you are ready to book, your photographer should let you know the next steps. This often includes signing a contract, paying a non-refundable retainer to secure your date, and creating a payment schedule for the rest of your payment. Be sure to clarify their cancellation or rescheduling policies as well.

Bonus Tips:

  • Trust Your Gut: Pay attention to how the photographer communicates and whether you feel comfortable with them. Chemistry is crucial, as you will be spending your ENTIRE wedding day with your photographer!
  • Ask About Extras: If there are specific shots or moments you want, discuss them upfront to ensure they’re on the same page.

Now you’re on the road to success!

By asking these questions, you’ll gain valuable insights into the photographer’s professionalism, experience, and compatibility with your wedding day vision. Remember, your photographer is more than just a vendor; they’re an integral part of your big day. Choose someone who feels like the perfect fit, and you’ll cherish the memories they capture for a lifetime.
